PD Decals | 32-001: Mosquito Bombers
Reviewed by Mark Proulx
PD Decals designed their first 1/32nd scale decal sheet to be used in conjunction with the Revell Mosquito. With all the resin aftermarket items, it's great to have some different schemes available. They have supplied the modeler with six choices to choose from:
- Mosquito Mk IV Series I W4072, GB-D 105 Squadron, May 1942
- Mosquito Mk IV Series II DZ464, XD-C 139 Squadron, June 1942
- Mosquito Mk IV Series II DZ548, GB-D 105 Squadron, June 1943
- Mosquito Mk IV Series II DZ319, HS-H 109 Squadron, May 1944
- Mosquito Mk IV Series II DK333, HS-F 109 Squadron, 1944
- Mosquito Mk IX LR503, GB-F, 105 Squadron, 1945
The decals are printed on four different paper sheets. I have not tried them yet, so I can't comment on their application. However, they appear to be very thin with a minimum of carrier film. The nose art and bomb logs are printed in perfect register. Don't let this poor resolution scan fool you into thinking that this is a poor quality decal sheet. The "F" for the bomb-aimer's window of LR503 is included, but probably won't show up in the scan.
National insignia or fin flashes haven't been supplied with this decal sheet, so the modeler will have to rely on the kit or spares box. The only roundels and fin flashes supplied are for the fuselage and tail of the Series I aircraft, W4072. This scheme requires the modeler to complete modifications, as the aircraft had early exhausts and short nacelles. To the best of my knowledge, no Series I conversion exists at this time. To complete the Mosquito Mk IX, LR503, two-stage Merlin engines are required. These resin items have been produced by Accurate Aircraft and Paragon.
PD Decals specify which books have been used as references. A brief history, painting instructions and port side profiles are portrayed for each aircraft. To determine further painting and decal placement instructions, additional references are required.
I am disappointed by the lack of national insignia, fin flashes and the requirement for additional references. Potential problems may be encountered when trying to build the Series I Mosquito. However, if you are willing to do additional research and want some different markings for your 1/32nd scale Mosquito, try PD Decals.
