Leading Edge Models | 32.05: CF 104 Starfighter Camouflage Scheme
Reviewed by Mark Proulx
The Starfighter saw service in Canada from 1962 to 1986. From low-level Nuclear Strike and Reconnaissance to the Conventional Attack roles performed at the end of its career, the CF 104 filled many varied operational roles. Ultimately, 37 men would perish flying the CF 104 while honoring Canada's commitment to NATO.
Leading Edge Models has quickly emerged as the premier decal supplier for Canadian Air Force subjects. Their latest release, CF 104 Starfighter Camouflage Scheme, continues that trend. Many colorful paint schemes were applied to the CF 104. The variegated scheme was the last applied to the Starfighter while in Canadian service.
Leading Edge has included decals to complete any one of seven variegated paint schemes applied to the CF 104. Decals are also included for a two seat CF 104, should a two seat conversion ever arrive. With the addition of Leading Edge Models decal sheet, "Standard CAF Black Numerals", virtually any Canadian Starfighter can be duplicated. Decal options also include the very colorful schemes applied to the CF 104 for "TAM 80". Resin RWR, applied to many late model CF 104's, are included with each decal sheet. A complete set of stencils complete the decal package.
Two pages of instructions are included with the decals. The instructions are very extensive. They supply the modeller with three views and complete information on stencil placement. For further information, I would recommend the book "Starfighter" by David L. Bashow. Complete painting instructions are included with references made to Humbrol enamels.
As with other Leading Edge Models decal sheets, these decals are printed in perfect register. They appear to be very thin and should respond well to decal setting solutions. I can't confirm this for sure, as I have not tried them myself.
By combining these decals with the multiple detail sets that were once available from KMC, a very stunning CF 104 would result. I highly recommend this decal sheet to anyone with an interest in the CF 104.
