Engines & Things | DB 605 Engine

E&T issued a line of ¨new¨ World War 2 engines. The line is very complete, and almost every engine is represented. I ordered a DB 605 engine for my G-2 project.
Don't buy it! It is even a waste of time to read why. As said before I ordered this one before I've seen a photo of it. I've received the engine two days ago in a plastic bag (the bag being the best part of the kit). It has paper backing on which their address is printed and a drawing of the engine. The engine is cast in one big block, then the bottom cooling system, and two oil containers. That is all. The details are crude and wrong. The surface is filled with sink holes and all sorts of dents, bents and all that unwanted stuff. The thing that bothers me the most is that the wiring is cast on the engine, you can imagine the effect. The plastic (I think that somewhere someone told me it was resin-well it is NOT) is very soft and I think that it has been moulded with very low pressure. The mold lines are not so big. If you want to rescue the engine, cut of the compressor (it is quite good, but still far from ¨can be used from the box¨ quality), then sand off all the details on the block-they are mostly wiring and it is easy to replace that. For the front part of the engine you need a lot of patience. For the back part, you should be able to salvage some components, but you will spend quite some time super detailing. And now for the best part, the bottom-there is a pit to be filled with putty to get it to the base where you start detailing...
OK, the bottom line. If you are building a German project with one of the DB family buy the Verlinden set, you get a cockpit section which you save for an later on Bf 109 project, or use the majority of generic parts of the cockpit in some other German project. I have been modeling only German project thus far, so I can't give any good advice on other subject. But I can comment that if you are building any Russian subjects then you are in deep... If there is no other way, buy the E&T engine, but you should be better off detailing the one which you get in the kit.
