Eagle Editions | EC49: German WW II National Insignia in 1/32nd Scale
Reviewed by Mark Proulx
Eagle Editions has released a set of 1/32nd scale German National Insignia in 1/32nd scale for the scale modeler. In this review we will have a brief look at what Jerry Crandall has offered us.
The highlight of the markings is that they have been printed to achieve the proper "scale effect". I am sure that many modelers are well aware of the phenomenon of scale effect, however for those that are not aware I will try to elaborate briefly.
A 1/32nd scale model should appear the same as the actual aircraft from a distance of 32 feet. The model aircraft should suffer the effects of 32 feet of atmospheric disturbance, as though the subject is looked at through a filter. In 1/32nd scale this is generally achieved by adding 15% white to any given color. For those wishing to read more about this I would suggest The official Monogram Painting Guide to German Aircraft 1935-1945.
These new markings are scaled to the 15% rule. Black German crosses are included for the wings and fuselage as well as Hakenkreuz for the tail. Instructions are not included as they are not required. These 1/32nd scale decals would be appropriate for virtually any German fighter of WW II.
Micro Scale prints these markings for EagleCals on a single sheet of paper. As with other sheets, carrier film is at a minimum and the markings appear to be printed in perfect register.
Many modelers feel that scale effect is a very important aspect to their construction sequence and in the past they were always let down by decals that appeared to be to dark. Hopefully EagleCals will address those concerns.
