This is a review of the second of four new decal sheets from EagleCal. It supplies markings for Willy Messerschmitt's venerable Bf 109G-6 in 1/32nd scale. These decals are to be used in conjunction with Hasegawa's popular Bf 109G-6. Jerry Crandall supplies four exciting new paint schemes, which I am sure, will catch the eye of many modelers.
To date, all EagleCals instructions have been printed on high quality glossy paper. The trend continues with this set of instructions, however, only two black and white reference photos are included for two of the aircraft. Where applicable, all additional references are given. Elaborate stencil diagrams are included as well as the side and top views printed in perfect color. An extensive text of specific detailing information is supplied for each aircraft.
The first Bf 109G-6 depicted on this sheet is "Yellow 6" as it appeared in February 1944 when assigned to 9./JG 54. The pilot was Fw. Fritz Ungar. No modifications are required to be done to the Hasegawa kit. This aircraft is finished in an RLM 74, 75 and 76 scheme. For additional reference, a very clear, close-up, black and white photograph of the port side is included.
Next, markings are included for "White 1", a Bf 109G-6y flown by Staffelkapitan Hptm. Karl-Heinz Langer with 7./JG 3 in the fall of 1943. The instructions state that a FuG 16zy antenna needs to be mounted under the fuselage, which is not included with the model. No photographs are included for this aircraft, however other reference material is mentioned.
The third aircraft is a Bf 109G-6 as found in January 1944 when assigned to II./JG 53. This was an aircraft equipped with underwing 20mm cannon gondolas for its use as a daylight bomber interceptor. This aircraft was also shared with II./JG 301 for its night Wilde Sau missions. This Bf 109G-6 is finished in an RLM 74, 75 and 76 scheme. A slightly blurry black and white photograph of the starboard side is included for additional reference.
The last aircraft is a very colorful Bf 109G-6 flown by Hptm. Wilhelm Lemke with 9./JG 3 in the summer of 1944. Unfortunately, no photographs are included of this unusually adorned aircraft. The top area around the yellow trim is provisional as stated in the instructions. A choice of two different styles of decals is supplied for this area for those wishing to choose how to complete this paint scheme. Photos and comments of a completed model built by Jerry Crandall with the use of these decals can be found here.
These decals are custom printed by Microscale. As with previous releases, the registration and color saturation is superb with a minimum of carrier film, which is what we have come to expect from EagleCals. I assume that little difficulty will be encountered with these decals though I have not tried them myself.
Jerry Crandall of EagleCals is to be commended for his continued support of the 1/32nd scale modeler, especially for those with an interest in Luftwaffe subjects. He offers quality, thoroughly researched decals for what is arguably amongst the most popular WW II modeling subjects. His passion for accuracy is evident with each new release of decals. I highly recommend this and other Eagle Editions products for those modelers wishing to complete their new Hasegawa Bf 109G-6.
