Eagle Editions | EC66: Graf & Grislawski Part 3
Reviewed by Mark Proulx
'Part 3 of the Graf & Grislawski decal series by Eagle Editions provides four colorful new schemes for the Bf 109. We see a mix of early and late schemes with Bf 109 E and G variants with this sheet. The G-2 would best be suited for the Hasegawa kit. However, the Bf 109 E markings could be applied to the Matchbox or Hasegawa offerings.
All the schemes on this sheet represent aircraft flown by Hermann Graf. They include the following:
- "Yellow 1", W.Nr 13531, a Bf 109G-2 displaying a wreath of 150 victories on the tail. Hptm. Hermann Graf flew the aircraft in Sept 1942. It is finished in a scheme of RLM 74/75/76.
- Unfortunately, the Werk Nummers are not known for the next three aircraft:
- "Yellow 9". This is a colorful yellow nosed Bf 109E-1 that Lt. Graf flew from Bucharest in Feb 1941. The aircraft is finished in a RLM 65/74/75 scheme with colorful yellow ID markings on the flying surfaces.
- "Yellow 9" is the same Bf 109E-1 as above before the application of the yellow identification marks. The scheme remains RLM 65/74/75.
- "Black 17" is a Bf 109E-4 flown very early in the career of Fw. Hermann Graf when he was assigned to 2./Erg. JGr. The scheme is RLM 65/70/02
The instructions include decals placement guides for the left fuselage side, upper and lower wing surfaces. The camouflage patterns are all identified and the RLM color chips should prove helpful to the modeler. The text identifies the subtle changes in the evolution of each aircraft. Stencil placement guides are supplied for the Bf 109E, as most of the aircraft on this sheet are for early 109s. No photos are included with the instruction sheet as references are made to the book, Graf & Grislawski: A Pair of Aces, reviewed here. Written by Christer Bergstrom, this book is a must for any reference library.
Microscale prints the decals over two pages. Similar to previous EagleCals, they are printed in perfect register with a minimum of carrier film. Multiple decals are included to create a single marking to assure quality registration. Complete stencils are also included. Some markings are provisional and identified as such in the instructions. I expect no difficulty in applying these markings though I have not had the opportunity to try them yet.
This new four part series of decals makes for a fascinating study of what is arguably the most popular fighter of the Second World War among modelers. One needs only to glimpse at the number of 109s submitted to Large Scale Planes and other Internet websites. I am sure that the decals from Eagle Editions will prove to be very popular sellers.
Review Sample Compliments of Eagle Editions.
