Eagle Editions | EC64: Graf & Grislawski Part 1
Reviewed by Mark Proulx
Jerry and Judy Crandall of Eagle Editions has just released their long awaited four-part decal set depicting the Bf 109's flown by Hermann Graf and Alfred Grislawski. Flying with JG 52 in the Russian Theater, these pilots would amass an incredible list of victories. This is a review of Part 1 in the series of 1/32nd scale decals.
Four Bf 109Fs are included with Part 1. They depict the following yellow nosed aircraft:
- "Yellow 5", a Bf 109 F-4, W.Nr. 13152 as flown by Fw. Alfred Grislawski in May 1942. This aircraft is finished in a scheme of RLM 74/75/76.
- "Yellow 4", a Bf 109 F-4, W.Nr. 7078. This aircraft was flown by Fw. Alfred Grislawski until mid May 1942. The aircraft is finished in a pattern of RLM 74/75/76.
- "Yellow 1", a Bf 109 F-4 W.Nr. 7420. Lt. Hermann Graf flew this aircraft on May 15th, 1942. The aircraft was finished in a pattern of RLM 74/75/76
- "Yellow 1" as an earlier version of the above aircraft and flown in March 1942. Common to all schemes on this sheet, the aircraft is finished in a pattern of RLM 74/75/76.
The instructions include complete decal placement locations, as well as details pertaining to each aircraft. Text identifies many of subtle differences enabling the modeler to follow the evolution of each aircraft. Color profiles are supplied of the left fuselage, upper surfaces and a scrap view of the undersides. Stencil locations are depicted using a Bf 109G as reference, similar to earlier Eagle releases.
Further details of the schemes can be found in the superb book published by Eagle Editions, Graf & Grislawski: A Pair of Aces, reviewed here. Written by Christer Bergstrom, this book is a must for any reference library.
Microscale prints decals over two pages. As with other EagleCals, these markings are opaque and printed in perfect register. Though I have not tried them, I expect little difficulty in applying these very thin decals.
Unfortunately, at the time of this review, an accurate Bf 109F isn't available as an injection molded kit in 1/32nd scale. However, all is not lost as Aires makes a very nice conversion set for the Hasegawa Bf 109G. It is obvious that large amount of research went into the creation of these decals and I am sure you won't be disappointed with them.
Review Sample Compliments of Eagle Editions.
