Jerry Crandall of Eagle Editions continues his fascination with the long nose Dora in the release of EC#60 in 1/32nd scale. This is a review of the release. These decals are suitable for any Dora in 1/32nd scale. Look for kits from Revell and Hasegawa, though I am sure modelers will opt for the newest release from Hasegawa.
There are four Dora's included with this new decal sheet. The first scheme represents "Black 1". This was the third Dora delivered when it was assigned Oblt. Hans Dortenmann of 14./JG 26 (IV Gruppe). The aircraft is finished in a RLM 76/82/83 scheme.
Next is "Black 11", a Fw 190D-9 of JG 4, W.Nr. Unknown. The aircraft is finished in a scheme of RLM 76/75/83 and colorful Blaugrun spots on the cowling.
The third Dora is the widely photographed aircraft of II./JG 6, "Blue 12", W.Nr. 500570. Originally thought to be "Black 12", these markings are now considered incorrect due to recently discovered color photos. The fuselage/wing underside is Blaugrun and natural metal. The upper surfaces are a combination of RLM 81/82/83, which is expanded upon in the instructions.
The last Dora is "White 11" of 13./JG 51, W.Nr. 213007. This aircraft is finished in a scheme of RLM 76/82/83. The MG 131 13mm gun cowling and MG 151 20mm inboard gun access covers are natural metal.
The instructions are printed over a six-page foldout. Tom Tullis, among the leading illustrators in the business today, supplies his superb color renditions of each aircraft. This includes a single side, top and bottom views of each subject. The top views, printed in color, are always useful in determining proper camouflage schemes. Eagle also includes text, further detailing each aircraft with pertinent historical data. Ten captioned photos are also included with most having never been published. I am sure this is a precursor to Jerry's forthcoming book on the Dora. Completing the comprehensive instructions is a large page showing proper stencil locations.
Microscale prints the decals over two sheets of paper. The markings appear thin with minimal visible carrier film, consistent with all decals from this manufacturer. Given Microscale's reputation, I expect no difficulties with these decals.
Jerry Crandall has clearly studied this late war Focke Wulf for many years. As modelers, we are fortunate to be able to draw on his expertise. These decals are well researched and I am positive that they will be popular given the interest in the subject matter. If accuracy is important to you, as it is to Eagle Editions, I suggest that you consider their decals on your next Dora project.
Review Sample Compliments of Eagle Editions.
