Aviaeology | AOD24011 Special Edition-Canadians in Coastal Command #3
Reviewed by Mark Proulx
Aviaeology has just released another exciting decal sheet detailing RCAF Mosquitoes as operated by 404 Squadron in Coastal Command service. In this review we will closely examine their 1/24th scale markings suitable for the superb Airfix kit.
To begin with, Aviaeology provides us with markings for five aircraft:<.p>
- 1) Mosquito FB VI EO-A RF838 404 Sqn.
- 2) Mosquito FB VI EO-H RF851 404 Sqn.
- 3) Mosquito FB VI EO-Z RF882 404 Sqn.
- 4) Mosquito FB VI EO-P RS856 404 Sqn.
- 5) Mosquito FB VI EO-X RS880 404 Sqn.
As with all Aviaeology markings released to date, the instructions alone are worth the purchase. They are extensive, as they are printed over six pages. They include side profiles, elaborate modeling notes and as an added bonus, scale plans and photos detailing the unique rocket rail arrangement attached to 404 Squadron Mosquitoes. However, modelers should note that a typing error has crept into the instructions and Aviaeology has been made aware of the problem. Text throughout the instructions referring to RS882 should in fact read RF882. Corrections will be made on subsequent instructions. Coastal Mosquito colors are explained with knowledgeable text highlighted with upper plan views. Colors are identified though not referenced to existing paint brands. References are identified, though they likely are not required as there are eight photos also included. Aviaeology also mention some of the aftermarket companies providing odd-on items for those wishing to further detail their model.
As good as the instructions are, the decals are an equal match and of the same high standard. These are silkscreen decals printed to the highest tolerances. They are printed over two pages. The registration on my sample copy is flawless and the colors appear opaque. There are enough national insignias to finish a single aircraft. Complete stencils are not provided. The few that are included serve to fill the gaps that Airfix failed to include in their boxing. Clear trim appears to be kept to a minimum for each marking.
Overall, I am quite impressed with the level of research that has gone into this release. The decals only sweeten the pot! I strongly recommend this comprehensive package to anyone interesting the Mosquito and its role with Coastal Command. I am confident you won't be disappointed.
