Xuron Corp. | 485: Longnose Plier - Smooth Jaws
Reviewed by Kevin Futter
US-based Xuron Corp. is a well-known maker of hand tools for modellers and hobbyists, with an extensive range of shears and cutters for every conceivable use case. Here we take a look at the company's Longnose Plier with Smooth Jaws. This tool is described in Xuron's product catalogue like so:
The Xuron® version of the traditional chain nose plier. Easily captures a human hair, tightens a thread, flattens a copper wire or draws a twisted wire cable through tubing. Light TouchTM return spring returns plier to its open position and non-slip Xuro-RubberTM grips help maintain control and precision. Designed to combine strength and precision without the bulk or lack of feel found in traditional long nose pliers. Available with smooth jaws (485) or with serrations (485S) for extra holding power.
The first thing I noticed when I removed these pliers from their packaging, was how light they are. They also have a nicely ergonomic feel in the hands, and are quite comfortable to hold and use.
The business end consists of a pair of short tines that taper to a sturdy point:
As the name of the tool suggests, the gripping surface is flat and smooth, and I could detect no rough edges or machine marks. The action is smooth and firm, and tip affords a confident grip on anything you squeeze down on. I even tested Xuron's claim of easily grabbing a human, and - ouch - it's true!
Conclusion
This is a quality tool that does exactly what it is intended to do, with minimum fuss. It's not glamorous, but it is highly effective. And, highly recommended!
Thanks to Xuron Corp. for the review sample.
