Reviewed by Ron Patterson
Aviaeology has just released an updated and expanded special edition decal set on RCAF Fighter Recon Spitfires of WW2.
The set allows for 7 different airframes of Mark IXc and Mk XIVe (high back and low Back) FR Spitfires. Included are:
- Spitfire FR.IXc MJ351 as aircraft S of 414 Squadron
- Spitfire FR.IXc MJ518 as aircraft O of 414 Squadron
- Spitfire FR.IXc MK202 as aircraft Q of 414 Squadron
- Spitfire FR.XIVe RN114 as aircraft RC-W of 39th Wing RCAF
- Spitfire FR.XIVe RM876 as aircraft H of 439 Squadron
- Spitfire FR.XIVe Low back MV348 as aircraft S of 414 Squadron
- Spitfire FR.XIVe Low back NH648 as aircraft P of 414 Squadron
The decals come in three separate sheets including a comprehensive stencil sheet. They are packaged with a very stout sheet of cardboard to insure there will not be any bending damage during shipping. Under close inspection I find these sheets flawless in execution. The color appears correct and they are printed in very crisp detail in absolutely prefect register. Very nice stuff
The comprehensive instruction sheet is printed double sided on four letter sized sheets of paper in black and white. An interesting feature when ordering from Aviaeology is that after you confirm your order they e-mail you a full color instruction set in PDF format.
These instructions leave absolutely no guess work when it comes to depicting all of these airframes. They are very complete. Information includes:
- Colours and finishes
- Brief overview of the history of FR Spitfires
- Details of each airframe depicted
- Very detailed profile drawings depicting all stencil placements including port, starboard profiles as well as top and bottom views.
- Port and starboard profiles of each of the airframe markings provided
- Period pictures of many of these aircraft
- Scale 3 view plans of the port and starboard camera fairings along with detailed instructions on how to successfully scratch build these details
The decals are available directly from Aviaeology. I can highly recommend this set to anyone wishing to build their Spitfire kit in a subject that is both interesting and a little different.
Review sample compliments of Aviaeology.
