1/32 Wingnut Wings RAF S.E.5a - Capt. James McCudden

By Esteban Murador

With its service beginning in March 1917, the Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5 was the most successful British fighter of World War I. It proved to be the fastest, maneuverable and easy fly aircraft. After its improvements on visibility, engine and armament, the S.E.5 proved to be a lethal aircraft, taking complete control in the skies over Europe. It was also the preferred aircraft of several legendary and known aces such as Billy Bishop, James McCudden, Edward Mannock, Albert Ball and many others.

This particular aircraft model belonged to famed British ace Capt. James Thomas Byford McCudden. Capt. McCudden used S.E.5a, B4863 to shot down 9 German aircraft between September and October of 1917. James McCudden finished the war with 57 victories.

I used Wingnut Wings’ 1/32 scale model kit. The kit speaks for itself, what a great kit! I also used a photo-etch cockpit, replicated wood grain interior, 1/32 Pheon’s excellent and well made decals, 1/32 RB Productions rigging turnbuckles with hair to produce the wires, 1/32 True Details exhaust pipes and 1/32 The Micro Group’s excellent REAL WOOD propellers.

This is a great representation of James McCudden’s famous RAF S.E.5a.
