Revell 1/32 AH-1G Cobra
By Scott Murphy
I built this Cobra to have a helicopter to enter into contests again. The Apache took first place in every contest it was entered so there was no where I could take it any more!
This is the old (1960s vintage) Revell kit. Although not bad for its day it was a pretty crude kit by today's standards. I scratch built the engine and transmission bay, super detailed the existing engine and transmission, scratch built the avionics compartment and SUU-11 7.62mm mini-gun pod.
I used the Cobra™ resin cockpit. It is a truly outstanding aftermarket kit. I added various small details, including Waldron instruments and scratch built the pilot's gunsight (which they curiously left out). I cut open the canopy to show off the cockpit detail. Because the kit is long discontinued and cutting out both the pilot and gunners doors would have left only a very small piece of plastic to hold the canopy together, I chose to only open the pilots door.
Model Master II Enamels were used to finish the kit. The decals were a combination of kit and home made. Again, Ii downloaded the 1st Cav emblem from the internet and printed it on white decal film.
