Kitty Hawk 1/35 Sikorsky MH-60R ‘Seahawk’, Converted to a Royal Danish Air Force Variant

Sikorsky MH-60R ‘Seahawk’ (Royal Danish Air Force)

Denmark’s newest helicopter and has been operational since 2017. The nine Seahawk helicopters are based with Squadron 723 under Helicopter Wing Karup. Denmark was the first European nation to acquire this new helicopter. The Seahawk carries out its primary mission while deployed aboard the four inspection vessels operating near Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Tasks include maritime surveillance, fisheries inspection, transport, search operations, search and rescue, and the assertion of sovereignty. With its long range and highly advanced sensor suite featuring a long-range radar, the Seahawk is exceptionally well-suited for these specific duties.

The Kit: Kitty Hawk Models 1/35 scale MH-60R “Seahawk.”

The kit features recessed surface detail, a highly detailed cockpit, and mission equipment specific to the Romeo variant. External stores, sensors, and landing gear components are accurately reproduced, making this an impressive large-scale model. The model can be built with the rotors either extended or folded. I did have quite a few issues with it and its instructions: wrong numbers for parts and parts that existed but had no id on the plans. The large number of extra parts, which are not intended to be used in the assembly of the MH-60R model, does not make things any easier. But then again there are parts included which I needed for the Danish version.

So many alterations to get a RDAF Seahawk: ELRP, AN/ALQ-144’s, hydraulic Harpoon, Antenna, SATCOMM, cable cutters, etc. And the rotor requires all the cabling which had to be scratched. I decided to replace the Sonobuoys launch equipment with the window instead, because it is rare to see this installation on the Danish Seahawk’s. This requires both inside and outside work and I had to cast the extra glass from clear resin. The Danish Seahawk’s have Martin Baker ‘Troop Gunner’ seats, so they had to be scratch-built using different materials.

Gunze Mr Hobby paints were used for it: H337 (FS35237), H307 (FS36320) and H338 (FS36495).
