Revell 1/32nd F-4E Phantom II

By Jarda Hajecek

Presenting my latest addition to the display case a Revell 1/32 rendition of the mighty Phantom II. This time I chose the Hellenic Air Force scheme. The model represents one of the very few Hellenic Phantoms with the one-piece acrylic windshield. The ship retained the original designation 68-424 painted in black as opposed to the usual dark gray (FS36118).

The kit has taken me a decade to finish. I started when our son was born and now he is 10! Time flies. I remember riveting the kit at night soon after he was born and then life and other projects intervened and the Phantom was being moved from work in progress to shelf of doom and back multiple times.

The kit itself is actually not bad at all. The fit is great, level of detail adequate, however the kit has its issues like the vastly weak landing gear (I opted to ignore it), too deep cockpit tub - corrected but still needed to add spacers to bottom of seats, lack of detail in the cockpit and the complete absence of intake ducts. In place of the ducts there is, well - nothing - just a hole to the fuselage with a weak attempt of a bulkhead with engine fan faces. I used etched intake plugs. Just a word of caution if you plan on using the Quickboost intake covers intended for the Tamiya kit, then don’t they are way too small for this kit.

Provided you address the cockpit, add riveting (not necessary as the surface detail is nice but adding the riveting provides nice optical breaking of the large surfaces), invest into better burner cans and possibly seamless intakes the kit is rewarding to build and in my opinion builds into impressive representation of the mighty F-4. Even if you just build this OOB you will be rewarded with a nice Phantom on the shelf. I would in that case just at least use the intake covers.
