Revell 1/32 Hawker Hunter Mk 6
By Ronald Dorenbos
The Royal Netherlands Air Force ordered 93 Hawker Hunter Mk.6 aircraft to replace the Hawker Hunter Mk.4s already in service. All aircraft were built in 1957 thru 1959 by the Fokker company in the Netherlands, equipping 4 squadrons. The Dutch Hunter Mk.6s were modified to carry AIM-9B Sidewinder missiles. The model shows a Hunter assigned to 324 Squadron at Leeuwarden AB in the Netherlands. This squadron disbanded in 1964, to be reconstituted as a Hawk surface-to-air missile squadron in West-Germany: ‘NATO’s finest Hawk squadron’ (as a former CO of this unit I might be slightly biased..).
Revell’s model is a fairly easy kit, but the mating of the air intakes with the forward and rear fuselage and wings requires careful attention. The kit is a true tail-sitter, so be sure to put enough lead in the nosecone. The model was airbrushed with DACO enamels. The kit’s decals require careful handling as they are prone to disintegrating. I used KMC’s cockpit. National markings and squadron badge are by Dutch Decal, the registration number is by Maketar custom masks. Sidewinders are Eduard’s AIM-9Bs, the pitot tube is Master’s. As the main undercarriage legs are fairly wobbly, you may consider replacement by a metal version.
