airscale 1/32 Boulton Paul Defiant

By Iain Ogilvie

I really wanted to do a Defiant in a night fighter scheme - probably something to do with building the old Airfix 1:72 kit back in the '70s. I suspect this one has come out a little better...

To see the full build, check out my thread in the Work in Progress forum.

The finish is really simple: fundamentally SMS 'Night Black' (with 'metal' and primer layers underneath so I could abrade back through the layers) followed by Tamiya clear, then decals and Xtracrylix matt varnish.

My thanks to Peter of Airscale for sending us one to review and build.

Definitely one of my all time favourite modelling projects and one I'd very highly recommend!

The atmospheric photos are the result of a quick play with AI tools ChatGPT to create a backdrop for my Defiant model. Choose an image with a plain background - in my case white - upload the photo (use the '+' button) - and then tell it what you want as a background.

Here is RAF Drem, winter '41/42 and ready for the night's 'trade'...

A couple more - by night on a cold winter's airfield near Edinburgh, January 1942...
