Former Foes - Airfix 1/24 Bf 109E and P-51D
By Martin Planes
The Bf 109 although a very old kit from Airfix now still makes up into an impressive model. I built it virtually OOB with the exception of adding Waldron belts and buckles to the interior which really make a difference. This along with the Mustang I purchased about 18 months ago and is a familiar Airfix re-release with different box artwork. The very pleasing difference between these kits and the ones first released in the dark and distant seventy's is the quality of the decal sheets...they are superb. Again with a little tlc and some good old Micro SOL and SET they needed virtually no attention apart from a slight wipe over with some flatting agent. The chequered markings on the Mustang for 'Big Beautiful Doll' I did expect to experience a few problems around the cowlings but not a bit. They really are of a high standard and they have a unique quality of being durable, workable, but give a superb finish. I don't know who produced them but my compliments to Airfix. My next project is the Hurricane which has a wealth of detail. I may even put it in a diorama with a few ideas I have in mind.
