Revell 1/32 MiG-21
By Ed Okun
This MiG-21 is the old Revell kit of the PF version. I built this model at least 15 years ago in an Egyptian camo scheme. Recently I stripped the paint off and brought it up to date to my current modeling skill level. I replaced the ejection seat with a converted kit seat. The scheme is from the Osprey book "Arab MiG-19 and 21 units in Combat". This is the coolest Syrian camo pattern I thought, almost a tiger stripe. I masked the dark green with left over pieces of "Black Magic" mask from another project, because I wanted the edges to be very tight, almost as if applied by hand. I also rubbed out the paint with fine steel wool after it had dried to make it appear worn (as described in the book). The roundel decals were cut from five separate pieces to show the 3 green Syrian stars for that time period.
The scene was created with a photo editing program (MicrograFX 4.0) and shows the MiG a second before the pilot bails out. The Phantom is another 1/32nd scale Revell kit. The background picture is an actual aerial view of the Golan Heights which I found on the internet.
