Fleet Air Arm Avengers Mk II & Mk III
By Tony O'Toole
Here is a pair of Trumpeter Avengers in Royal Navy markings.
Mk II, British Eastern Fleet, Palembang Raid, 1944
Avenger Mk.II (TBF/M/-1C) is in the markings of the Royal Navy`s Eastern Fleet (sometimes called the East Indies Fleet) when it was operating in the Indian Ocean and around the Dutch East Indies from Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). After leaving the Indian Ocean for Australia to join the US Navy in the Pacific, the Eastern Fleet was renamed as the British Pacific Fleet...and the elements remaining in Ceylon became the East Indies Fleet...clear as mud!
Mk III, British Pacific Fleet, Australia, summer 1945
The Blue British Pacific Fleet Avenger Mk III (TBM-3) was only based in Australia and was not actually Australian (these Mk IIIs were due to embark from Australia with the BPF for the next series of carrier operations against Japan but the war ended before this occurred).
