Scale Caliber | 1/24th scale P-40 Flaps

Reviewed by Jay Laverty

I have to admit I was a bit worried when Robin told me the price of the flaps. At £14.95 I was concerned that people would be unwilling to part with their cash. However once I saw them I could see right away that they were well worth the money. It had also got me to thinking about what we expect by way of value for money, and sometimes I forget that the smaller companies who are willing to tackle the subject matter that seems to be ignored by the larger players simply do not have the financial resources and capabilities to produce matter in a large enough quantity to substantially reduce the cost and therefore they have to work at much higher price margins along with lower profit margins.

But…having said all of that this flap set is done to just as high a standard, if not higher than any I have seen before. Precisely designed, each spar is perfectly done and there is plenty of rivet detail represented to make the surfaces really come alive.

Included with the etched metal are the stainless steel rods, and plastic strip you will need to complete the job, so there is no need to search around and guesstimate the appropriate pieces.

As I mentioned in my article on the Vintage Fighter Series P-40 in Model Airplane International, the Vintage kit is a great base to work from, but definitely could use some help. With the addition of the flaps, this area of the model will be transformed instantly. As you can see in the accompanying pictures the set looks wonderful when made up.

This and several other detail sets will be available through Cammett in the near future, in the form of an engine and a cockpit detail set with the engine set being available very shortly. At £14.95 I think these are well worth it, and I will definitely be adding them to the British version when I finally get around to it.
