Monogram 1/32 Clear Mustang F-51

By James Birchfield

The attached photos are of a heavily modified Monogram Clear Mustang using Jerry Rutman´s excellent resin cockpit, MLG wheel bay, wheels, struts, tail wheel bay and spinner all of which fit very well. The kit wings, fuselage, prop blades and horizontal elevators were kept and sanded. I used sheet plastic to fabricate the lower exhaust doors and tail wheel doors. Kit decals were used and Model Master paints were used. The ordnance came from other kits, but I did fabricate the rocket pylons. The wing stations for the napalm tanks came from a resin after market company whose name I can´t recall. The flaps were cut and repositioned. And with this old kit and all the cut-outs for operating features, tons o putty was used. The F-51 is different from the P-51 and my reference source was Osprey Frontline Color #1 F-51 Mustang Units Over Korea with a photo of the aircraft on page 86.
